Antimicrobial Peptides Grafted onto a Plasma Polymer Interlayer Platform: Performance upon Extended Bacterial Challenge

چکیده
To combat infections on biomedical devices, antimicrobial coatings have attracted considerable attention, including comprising naturally occurring peptides (AMPs). In this study the aim was to explore performance upon extended challenge by bacteria growing in media above samples. The AMPs LL37, Magainin 2, and Parasin 1 were selected basis of well-known membrane disruption activity solution covalently grafted onto a plasma polymer platform, which enables application multilayer coating strategy wide range biomaterials. Detailed surface analyses performed verify intended outcomes sequence. Samples challenged incubation bacterial growth for 5 20 h. Compared with control surface, all three AMP showed reductions colonization even at high initial seeding × 107 CFU, but there increasing numbers dead attached surface. All found be non-toxic primary fibroblasts. These thus could useful produce antibacterial biomaterials, though possible consequences arising from presence need studied further, compared non-fouling that avoid attachment bacteria.

End-Grafted Polymer Chains onto Inorganic Nano-Objects
Organic/inorganic nanohybrid materials have attracted particular scientific and technological interest because they combine the properties of the organic and the inorganic component. Inorganic nanoparticles exhibit interesting electrical, optical, magnetic and/or catalytic properties, which are related with their nano-scale dimensions. However, their high surface-to-volume ratio often induces a...
متن کاملOrthogonal Surface-Grafted Polymer Gradients: A Versatile Combinatorial Platform
Orthogonal polymer brush gradients are assemblies of surfaceanchored macromolecules, in which two material properties of the grafted chains (e.g., grafting density, molecular weight) vary independently in orthogonal directions. Here, we describe the formation and applications of two such orthogonal assemblies, involving: (1) molecular weight and grafting density (MW/r) gradients of a given poly...
متن کاملAntimicrobial peptides targeting bacterial ribosome
Antibiotics kill bacteria by inhibiting vital enzymes involved in cellular metabolism, including protein production. However, extensive and sometimes gratuitous usage of antibiotics has led to microbial resistance, which is constantly emerging against every antibiotic class, raising serious public health concerns and the urgency for the development of new antibacterial therapeutics. Different s...
متن کاملAntimicrobial/Antimold polymer-grafted starches for recycled cellulose fibers.
In this work, an antimicrobial guanidine polymer (PHGH) was grafted onto starch as a carrier to form branched or grafted chains along the starch backbone. This grafting improved the antimicrobial properties and the adsorption of the starch on recycled cellulose fibers. Similar work was also conducted on bleached sulfite fibers for comparison. The results showed that the starch, grafted with 12 ...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Peptides Derived from Milk: A Review
Milk proteins provide a natural source of bioactive peptides with potential health benefits and applications in the food industry. The release of these peptides from milk proteins is achieved either by hydrolysis using digestive proteases or by lactic acid bacteria fermentation. Peptides, particularly those derived from milk proteins, can exert a wide range of nutritional, functional and biolog...
